In March of 2023, a trend called 'American style portait' went fire on Chinese social medias. As portrait photographers, we saw a protential bussniess prospect an immediately start to investigate and research the lighting, props, poses and structure of these photos.
We found that the aesthetic of 'American style portait' is informal and casual, with a background reflect the19th century to evoke a youthful vitality. The props we choose are: 'wire earphones, a Motorrola cell phone, chewing gum, sunglasses and old-fashioned CCD camera'.
Lighting was kept simple, we wanted more contrast and shadows to make the character more skinny and stereoscopic. All in all we successfully achived these techniques and received many positive feedbacks from our clients.
All in all, this project was a success. During pre-production, there was an intresting debate over cup to use. 'Should we use McDonald's cup or KFC?' Then someone proposed that since we are in UK, why we not use something relevant? Eventually, we bought some cups from Greggs.
